Our History

It all began on a cold November morning in 1969. A young man who had never preached a sermon was accompanied by his wife, who was six months pregnant with their first child, to Florence, South Carolina. The young couple had no idea what God was about to do but were eager to find out. The burning desire in Bill Monroe's heart was to start a church where people would come to know Jesus Christ as Savior on a regular basis, a church that would make a difference in eternity!

It turned out that his first sermon would be preached to 18 people in an abandoned theatre building that had a decaying frame structure with red asbestos brick siding peeling off the walls. The building was rented for $58.50 per month. The second week there were 8 people present. Struggling as a bi-vocational preacher, he and a few like-minded people began to pray and visit homes even more fervently. God began to change lives. On April 9, 1972, the young church relocated to South Irby Street. Florence Christian School was started that same year.

Since that time, the church and school have continued to grow. At Florence Baptist Temple, many people have found the forgiveness, hope and purpose that comes through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Now, after 42 years, more than ever before, we desire to shine the light of hope to the entire world beginning here in Florence. As always, there is a place for you at FBT!
